This is a great opportunity to test special offers and incentives - you can send one offer to half the database and one to the other, or send different deals to different geographical areas; the options are endless. If you can create special landing sites to make the click traceable, so much the better. A time-limited offer is a good idea, as it encourages an immediate or fast response.

Written Style

• Clarity. Edit, edit, edit; avoid jargon and multiple adjectives. Like web copy, email copy should be snappy and easy on the brain.

• Humour. A dash of personality can only improve your chances of identifying with the reader.

• Scannable. Subheadings are good; bold or highlighted keywords are great for a reader with little time and patience.

• Short. There is some debate on the desirable length of email copy; some people like to read, but others just want a short message. The safest bet is to put the key messages at the top for the impatient, and then develop them further down for those who like to read details.

• Conversational. Think about the emails we are used to receiving from friends and family - written in an informal style. If you write the way you speak, there will be less jargon and less formality.

• Demonstrate a knowledge of the customer and market. As discussed above, some buzzwords can be effective. Lastminute’s style is satirical, with a finger firmly on the pulse of its readership. Achieving this is difficult, but it pays to understand your customer culture - and will improve all of your communication output.

• Active verbs. Get rid of ‘visit’ and ‘view’ in favour of ‘go’ and ‘look at’ - make your copy compelling and it will send customers straight to the site.

• ‘You’ not ‘We’. As with any written material, count the ‘you’s and the ‘we’s, prioritising the former. The customer doesn’t care about you.

Call to Action

Consider what reaction you want to your campaign. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and ask yourself whether the email inspires you to take that action. Put the ‘call’ at the top AND bottom of your email, to catch the skimmers as well as the long-readers.

Text-only option

If you’re sending HTML emails (with graphics and fonts), offer a text-only option or direct readers to the site (place this link at the top of your email so that if the pictures aren’t showing they can click immediately).

Subject line

Give some thought to the subject line before firing off the campaign. It should be meaningful, and interesting but not too clever - and avoid words like Free and Offers, as these emails sometimes get blocked by spam filters.

The law

It’s now illegal to send individuals unsolicited emails, unless they have signed up to your list or you have paid for an opt-in list from elsewhere. It’s also a requirement to include your company info (and the more you include, the more credibility you will get). And need we mention an unsubscribe link?

I looked at the popular keyword searches and decided to write an article on Paris Hilton. I decided to start with her horoscope for some reason. I found that she was born on 17 February 1981 and came under the sign of the Metal Rooster. I also learned that she and her sister, Nicky, once lived in the Waldorf in New York and that they were going to inherit a zillion dollars each.

I saw Paris Hilton on the Letterman show some time back. He was unable to get a conversation going with her. She sat there like a bump on a log. Maybe she had a bad night the night before. I was surprised that she didn’t fall asleep right then and there.

Anyway: the Hiltons! Nothing there!

I decided to go for the real Paris in France, the real thing, the place where the Da Vinci Code starring Tom Hanks was made.

My grandkids saw the movie the other night. My granddaughter said something like “It was an unbearable diatribe on non-history.”

I had warned them not to go.

I tried to read the book. I call it boring scene descriptions with no original story.

I like Tom Hanks. Let’s stay out of Perdition!

The last time I was in Paris was some years ago when I flew in to Charles de Gaulle Airport and waited forever for a scientist to pick me up and drive me to Germany. He showed up just when I had decided to catch a plane to Luxemburg and get to my destination in Metlock, Germany on my own hook.

It was a hot muggy day in Paris. The smog was worse than when I lived in the Los Angeles areas. The traffic was horrific and it took us forever to get out of town. Finally we were out in the countryside, the most beautiful landscape in the whole wide world.

We had dinner at a country restaurant. We waited over an hour for our dinner. I guess they had to catch the rabbit. We listened to a large party of French ladies gab and gab and gab. I distinctly heard several of them say, “Did you know-(Vous avez su-).”

It was announced this week that genuinely committed talks on the reunification of Cyprus would come into effect in September of this year. Demetris Christofias, the Greek Cypriot president, met with the Turkish Cypriot president Mehmet Ali Talat on the 28th of August, and both are reportedly keen to discuss a potential reunion of the island. It is the fourth time Talat and Christofias have met to discuss union issues since the latter came to power, signaling a potentially serious reconstitution of what it will mean for citizens on the island to call themselves Cypriot. Long before the division, and indeed, long before the U.K held any claims, Cyprus had been under the colonial possession of the Ottoman Empire, of which Turkey was the centre. At that time it was a united island, though it had a strong ethnic mix; the Ottoman Muslims cohabited with the Christian Greeks. It was only during the late nineteenth century that Turkey suffered any challenge to its domination in Cyprus, and this is generally attributed to the crumbling of the Ottoman Empire, which saw many of Europe’s Great Powers competing for the empire’s border territories. The most famous of these conflicts, the Crimean War, saw the Ottoman Empire supported by an alliance of Great Britain, France and Sardinia against the territorial ambitions of Russia, who were at that time viewed by many European diplomats and heads of state as the most dangerous threat to the continent’s status quo. But when it came to Cyprus, it was Great Britain who looked to shift the balance of power on the Ottoman Empire’s borders, though it was cloaked within a commitment from the U.K to once again protect the balance of power against Russian expansion. Administrative power over the island was given to Great Britain in 1878. After the Ottoman Empire allied with the defeated powers in World War One, it was decided that Cyprus be annexed as part of post-war negotiations. 11 years later, Cyprus became an official colony of the British Empire. Under the British Empire, and fueled with Woodrow Wilson’s post-war implementation of self determinism, Greek Cypriots established the ‘National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters’ in 1955. Turkish Cypriots countered with the ‘Turkish Resistance Organisation’, and both groups sort for independence on their own terms. Independence was indeed granted in 1960, with both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots maintaining constitutional rights, and the island became ‘The Republic of Cyprus’. From there, a number of flash points occurred. In the 1970s, a Greek coup funded by the United states attempted to unite Cyprus with Greece. turkey invaded Cyprus in order to ratify the original constitution, and a civil war raged. Its consequence was the partitioning of Cyprus into Turkish and Greek sections. That is the position in which the island currently stands today. If Christofias and Talat are to succeed in reunification talks, they will have to be aware that they have the weight of history on their shoulders.
