Mobile Broadband Providers to Be Brought Under the Realm of New Net Neutrality Rules
The new chairman of the FCC, Julius Genachowski, is planning to formalise the regulatory principles that were drawn four years back and turn them into new neutrality rules. These new rules can be collectively considered as the most far-reaching net neutrality policy that the USA will have be a witness to. It was already known that the rules would face resistance from the service providers, but the new rules could be even worse than what the mobile broadband providers had thought initially.
The main purpose of these net neutrality rules, as they exist now, is to ensure that any internet user should be able to access any data or run any application on any device, and no service provider should be able to unfairly influence the use of any content or service on its network. The rules are intended to ensure fair competition between the operators and service providers, thus enforcing an environment where none of the ISPs can play favourites.
The new rules, however, will implement the same transparency standards on the mobile broadband providers as is applicable over their wired counterparts. This has resulted in stiff resistance from the mobile broadband providers. They are of the view that such an act of excessive control over network management will prevent them from making the most of the limited available bandwidth.
They also argue that as in the UK, competition within the market will be enough regulation for the industry. They hold that any forced regulation will impede competition and in turn negate the zeal for innovation and investment amongst providers.
